Are Ipods promoting a more secluded lifestyle?

With the Ipod becoming the large phenomena that is becoming in the world a big question that could be posed is if Ipods are promoting people to become more secluded in what they do? The Ipod is a personal music player and with its very fast growing popularity begs the question when people are using them as well as to what extent. Many young people use their Ipods on a daily basis be it while walking around the mall or school or whilst in the car. This could point to that they are using their Ipods to shut out the outside world and avoid conversation rather than to enjoy personal music. This does prove what writer Douglas Mann mentioned when he said we live in a society that thrives on isolation.

I also agree, ipods are just one form of new media which offer people a way of avoiding interpersonal relations.By putting these on, you do seclude yourself and make yourself unapproachable.I mean its hard enough trying to spark a conversation with a stranger, howmuch more so when they have these things plugged in their ears?It just says, "i don't want to hear it" to me....

iPods are promoting more than just a secluded lifestyle they are, allowing people to escape from reality. Walking around campus all you see are peoples heads bobbing around with ear phones stuck in their ears. In today’s times you actually don’t know whether or not you should greet these people who are a world of music. You actually never know what they are listening to, some may be lessening to pre-recorded notes, and this can lead to new innovative ways in which students can use to cheat. One may even think that students work for the Intelligence Unit of South Africa. With the functions iPods have this ca lead to people of thinking of ways to attach the government or the economy, or even to go on a mass murder rampage.

well ipods entitle you to your own privacy, kind of like living in your own world, you are entitled to be in your own worldsometimes. but it becomes disturbing if it excluides you from the daily things that happen around you, when you think about it, actually knowing and listening to people in a way reassures us that bwe are alive in a way, its all part of being alive

I agree that ipods, do promote isolation and lack of interactivity with other people. It is a way in which people can escape from other individuals and be in a world of their own. It is hard to talk and have a conversarion with another person while they are listening to music. It is very impersonal and makes the person seem very disinterested in what others have to say to them.

I agree, ipods does promote isolation in that it allows people to be caught up with their own way of life and it decreases the amount of interaction with their friends and family, and more so society.

Yes i agree with you Byron i definately think that I-pods promote a secluded lyfestyle. It gives us a perfect excuse to ignore people and to chose when and who we want to interact with.

Promoting isolation! I would agree fully with that, as with mobile phone usage, people often use iPod's to avoid social interaction. I know I am a culprit, often people simply use their technological devices, not for their actual purpose, but rather to avoid talking to other people

The whole new media thing kills ubuntu! And its also disrupts one from studying i'm at varsity yes i don't have one but i can't count the number of students that i've seen listening to music during lecture times and this makes me wonder if they hear even a single word from the lecture's mouth coz most of the times the noise is annoying even with me sitting next to them. But hey one just has to decide whether he/she is going to be the new media's slave.
